It is inspired by the Icelandic statue of Thor from 1000 AD, found on the Eyarland farm near Akureyri. The original may be viewed at the National Museum in Iceland. In Icelandic tradition, the Mjolnir is often depicted in a cross shape. The statue may be based upon a scene from the Edda, in which Thor is seated and grasps his Hammer with both hands during a wedding ceremony.
